The White Portrait series was born out of a question: how little information can you have in a photographic portrait and still see the face? What is the essence of a person's face? This series of portraits followed a number of years of intense investigation into the concentration camp work and studying prisoner portraits taken by the Nazis. It also represents a departure of photographic equipment; I began using a 4”x5” press camera and Polaroid Type 55 film, which produced a positive and negative at the same time. Unfortunately, Polaroid went out of business shortly after I began this series.
